Why won't my student start their work?
Most students who won't start aren't refusing — they can't figure out the first step, which is a task-initiation problem, not a motivation problem.
Task initiation is an executive-function skill: turning an intention into a first physical action. When a task feels large or ambiguous, students with weak initiation freeze and look defiant or lazy. Shrinking the first step and making it concrete usually restarts them faster than any consequence.

Recognize
The student sits with a blank page, reorganizes materials, asks unrelated questions, or goes to the bathroom right as work begins. They often can do the work once started.
Respond
Name the first step out loud and make it absurdly small: 'Write your name and the first date.' Start it with them for thirty seconds, then step away.
Support
If a student needs an adult to launch every task across settings and weeks, note it for your support team — this is the kind of pattern accommodations or a 504 plan address.
